About Zachary's Chicago Pizza
Nestled in the heart of Berkeley, California, at 1853 Solano Ave, Zachary’s Chicago Pizza stands as a beloved destination for pizza enthusiasts and families alike. Since its inception in 1983, Zachary’s has carved out a reputation for serving authentic Chicago-style deep-dish and thin-crust pizzas, bringing a taste of the Windy City to the East Bay with a distinctive California twist[1][7]. The restaurant’s inviting atmosphere, adorned with vibrant customer artwork collected over decades, creates a warm, community-focused dining experience that appeals to both locals and visitors seeking a memorable meal[6].
Zachary’s Chicago Pizza was founded by Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel, a couple from Wisconsin who shared a passion for Chicago pizza and a dream to create something special in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood[1][3][7]. Their vision quickly gained traction, and what began as a modest eatery has blossomed into a local institution with multiple locations across the East Bay, each maintaining the same commitment to quality and hospitality that defined the original[1][3]. In a testament to their dedication to their team and community, Zachary’s transitioned to full employee ownership in 2010, ensuring that every pizza served is crafted with pride and care by those who have a personal stake in the business’s success[1][6][7].
The menu at Zachary’s is a celebration of both tradition and innovation. Signature offerings include the iconic Spinach & Mushroom stuffed pizza, a crowd favorite featuring fresh spinach, mushrooms, a blend of three cheeses, and special spices—a dish that has earned the restaurant over 225 “Best Pizza” awards and a loyal following[1][2]. Other highlights include the Zachary’s Special, loaded with Italian sausage, green pepper, onion, mushroom, and mozzarella, and the Chicken Special, made with free-range chicken breast, mushrooms, mozzarella, fresh basil, garlic, and tomato sauce[2]. For those preferring a lighter option, thin-crust varieties are available, with classic choices like cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and vegetarian slices served daily during lunch hours[2]. Every pizza is prepared with high-quality ingredients and a meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a consistently delicious experience.
Beyond the food, Zachary’s is deeply rooted in the fabric of its community. The restaurant’s walls are a canvas for local art, thanks to a tradition that began in the mid-1980s with a biannual art contest. Today, the collection boasts over 300 pieces, transforming the dining room into a gallery that reflects the creativity and spirit of Berkeley[6]. This commitment to local culture extends to the restaurant’s operations, as Zachary’s regularly participates in community events, celebrates milestones with special promotions, and fosters a sense of belonging among its staff and customers[1][6].
Zachary’s Chicago Pizza is more than just a place to eat—it’s a gathering spot for families, friends, and pizza lovers of all ages. The restaurant offers dine-in, takeout, and online ordering for convenience, with friendly service that makes every visit feel like coming home[2]. Whether you’re craving a hearty deep-dish pie, a crisp thin-crust slice, or simply a welcoming environment to enjoy a meal, Zachary’s delivers on all fronts. For reservations or inquiries, guests can reach the Solano Avenue location directly at +1 510-525-5950.
With a legacy spanning over four decades, Zachary’s Chicago Pizza continues to honor its founders’ original vision while evolving to meet the tastes and expectations of a new generation. It remains a cornerstone of Berkeley’s culinary scene, a testament to the power of good food, community, and shared ownership. From its art-covered walls to its award-winning pies, Zachary’s is a place where every slice tells a story—one of passion, tradition, and the enduring appeal of a great pizza shared among friends[1][6][7].

I've had A LOT of pizza, in a few different states in my lifetime. Let me tell you... Nothing compares. The sauce 😲 is so flavorful, not sweet, super chunky roasted tomatoes. You can taste fresh garlic. The crust was crispy, flaky. Not so much doughy so you don't get filled up on crust in one piece! Even in the middle where others are usually soggy from all the sauce & grease! We had traditional pan with sauce on top Not something I'm used to or usually order but told it's their specialty so.... It DID NOT disappoint! The real mozzarella cheese had great pull & flavor. Every single thing about our pizza stood out in flavor & quality. And the people here were just lovely 🫶🦄 It was the perfect start to the day in Berkeley in celebration of our 15 year anniversary. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 🔥

Supposedly this restaurant has been open since 1983, I’m not sure how they survived for that long if their pizzas were like what we had eaten. The place was still relatively crowded near closing, and was decorated with nostalgic memorabilia. Caesar salad was pretty good but standard and on the heavier side. The two pizzas we got were the thin style Rustic Italian and the Chicago style Zachary’s special. The Rustic Italian had pretty good flavor and I liked the whole garlic cloves, though it could be more roasted. The biggest problem was the crust; it was so granular it almost felt like it could break apart easily, and it did not have that pizza char that it could greatly benefit from. The Zachary’s special was very disappointing, it was filled with basically just canned tomato sauce with very sparse sausage (that was just steamed inside the pizza) and other toppings. The flavor was just sweet and lacked any depth. The crust was even worse on this one, and was just a chore to even finish. The prices for these were also more on the expensive side at around 25-35 dollars per 10 inch pizza. There are many other pizza places you can go to in Berkeley before even considering this one.

The thick crust pizza is one of the best if you like tomatoes. It takes around 30 minutes to cook. Very flavorful and filling.

The menu has many delicious options. Your can order just one slice or any size pizza you want with a variety of scrumptious toppings. My small mouthwatering pizza was a hot, cheesy, saucy offering with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and spinach. There was plenty left over to take home for two more meals. The service staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. The ambiance is great. I loved the artfully pleasing wall decor. The place is super clean and that includes the bathrooms. This was the first time I dined in because I usually get take out. But there is spacious seating here that can accommodate any size group.

Forgot to make a review a year ago when I revisited. After a decade, I’m happy to say that the delicious taste of this deep dish pizza is still the same as before! There’s no place like Zachary’s, I highly recommend it. If there thin crust pizzas are anything like I remember, those were also really good. I also love that all locations have art pieces of Zachary’s in different media, it’s very fun and unique!
